Steve Fossett Search Resumes

After being declared officially dead in February of 2008, a 10 member team of athletes and mountaineers has begun looking for Steve Fossett again.

Back when he was originally reported missing, I helped with the searching by looking at satelite images using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. Volunteers would be asked to look at a small piece of the search area and mark an image as does not or might contain wreckage.

The same image would be shown to several volunteers in order to minimize the likely-hood of something getting missed. Anything tagged as possible wreckage would then be looked at by professionals.

It was really an amazing look at how technology can help out those in need. Unfortuneatly, the Amazon Mechanical Turkwas not successful in locating Steve Fossett, but it did locate several other aviation wrecks that were able to give closure to other families of lost aviators from many years ago.
